What is an AED and why should everyone have access to it?News
Kimberlie Hanna
In cardiac arrest, every second counts. Literally. Starting defibrillation within 3 to 5 minutes increases the chance of survival by more than 70%. But an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) must be nearby and clearly visible.
Yet for many people, it is still unclear exactly what an AED is, how it works, and why it is so essential in businesses, schools, sports clubs and public spaces.
In this article, we explain it clearly.
What is an AED?
An AED is a portable device that analyzes a person’s heart rhythm and – if necessary – administers an electric shock to stop a fatal cardiac arrhythmia (ventricular fibrillation). The device is called automatic external because it:
- Automatically detects if a shock is needed
- Placed externally on the body (via electrodes)
- A defibrillator is one that can save lives at the touch of a button
An AED guides the user with clear spoken or visual instructions. You do not need to have a medical background to use the device.
Why is an AED important?
Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone; young or old, healthy or sick. Every year in Belgium, more than 10,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital. Less than 10% survive this … unless there is quick intervention.
An AED significantly increases the chances of survival. For every minute without CPR, survival rate drops by 10%. Using an AED within 3 minutes? Then survival chances increase by 70%. Without an AED, there is barely a 5-7% chance of survival.
Therefore, it is crucial that AEDs are not only available, but also quickly accessible and ready to use.
How do you use an AED?
An AED is designed so that even absolute laymen can use it. Here’s how it works:
- Open the cabinet (sometimes with PIN or alarm signal)
- Turn on the device
- Follow the spoken instructions
- Attach the electrodes to the bare chest
- Let the device analyze the heart rhythm
- Administer shock if requested
- Start (or resume) CPR until emergency services take over
Many AEDs have pictograms or screens that provide additional guidance throughout the process.
Where can you find AEDs?
In Belgium, the number of AED locations is growing steadily, but there is still room for improvement. You can find AEDs at places such as:
- Public places (railway stations, airports, town squares)
- Sports halls, fitness centers and swimming pools
- Schools and universities
- Business parks and office buildings
- Healthcare facilities and residential care centers
Tip: check if your work or living area has one and if it is easily visible and accessible.
Buying an AED? Here’s what to look out for
When buying an AED device, there are some important factors to consider. First, you need to pay attention to the type of electrodes; for adults, children or both? In addition, the choice of language and the instruction system is also important. Battery life and maintenance cycle, IP rating (how dust and splash resistant the device is), connectivity and accessories are also things to choose. In terms of accessories, consider a wall cabinet, a carrying case or a CPR kit.
In addition, it is important that the AED be intuitive and quick to use in emergency situations. Especially in places where many non-medical personnel are present.
